An Armagh businesswoman and a dedicated supporter of Team Haven, a non-funded homeless outreach center in Belfast, has taken on a remarkable challenge to raise funds. Starting today, (Thursday 9th May), Katrina Barber, who as well as being a successful businesswoman, is also a Miss Co. Armagh Elegance title holder for the British Isles, has made the decision to give up chocolate until the end of October. This endeavor is especially significant as Katrina is a self-proclaimed chocolate enthusiast, having enjoyed it daily for most of their life.

Katrina’s Chocolate-Free Challenge:

Katrina, owner of Pure Magic Boutique in Armagh City Centre made the decision to give up chocolate for nearly six months – a testament to her commitment to making a difference. As a chocolate lover, this challenge will undoubtedly require immense willpower and determination. By undertaking this personal sacrifice, Katrina aims to raise both awareness and funds for Team Haven, ensuring that their important work can continue.

Speaking to UrbanABC, the Richhill native said: “I’ve been involved with Team Haven for about two years now. The work the charity does is unfortunately really needed within the community. I try to help out in any way I can. Whether it be cooking homemade meals and bringing them to Belfast or donating clothes to the homeless community.

“My cooking is inspired by my Grandfathers side of the family who are South African so I try to cook up food that is different and provide something that perhaps a homeless person may not have tasted before.

“I suppose what’s different with Team Haven is you immediately see the benefit in any small thing you do. When I deliver food to the charity it’s given out straightaway. Often there are queues of people just waiting on a hot meal or something as simple as a cup of tea”.

Foodbank

In times of food insecurity, community support is crucial. Team Haven’s foodbank is an incredible resource for individuals and families facing hunger. They are committed to providing assistance during challenging times. The foodbank operates on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11am to 2pm, carefully selected to accommodate the needs of the community.

The foodbank relies on dedicated volunteers and sometimes they might need to adjust the opening hours at short notice. It’s all thanks to the dedication and commitment of these amazing volunteers that the foodbank can make a difference.

Individuals like Katrina selflessly give their time and energy in various ways to support the community. Their contributions are invaluable and greatly appreciated by the team.

As well as being a local business woman, Katrina is also an established model. Last month she represented Northern Ireland at the “Miss British Isles Elegance modelling competition. Katrina, the only model selected to represent NI, travelled to Chester for the final on 5th April.

Now fresh from the catwalk Katrina has set herself a challenge to raise much needed funds for the charity.
