In a significant boost for the small town of Gilford, Co Down, residents are celebrating the return of their much-needed supermarket and fuel service station. With a population of less than 2,000, the community had faced nearly seven years of traveling to nearby towns for essential services, making this opening of EuroSpar a momentous occasion.
Mona and Eric Treanor, who previously operated a Mace shop and petrol station in Gilford, were beloved figures in the community from 1988 until the unfortunate closure of their business in early 2018. The absence of a local supermarket and fuel station left residents with limited options, forcing them to travel further afield for groceries and fuel.
This development marks a new chapter for Gilford, enhancing the quality of life for its residents and supporting the local economy.
The group behind the new EuroSpar, The Henderson Group, a family-owned business, has invested £2 million in the community and aims to enhance local shopping options with the unveiling of the new supermarket.
Spanning an impressive 7,400 sq ft, the new EuroSpar features a state-of-the-art supermarket designed to meet the needs of Gilford residents. In addition to the supermarket, the site also includes a six-pump Maxol fuel forecourt, offering convenience with coffee and food-to-go options.
Mark McCammond, retail director at Henderson Group, said the company was delighted to complete the build and open for the local community
He added: “This is a store that has been anticipated for many years, so we are thrilled to officially open the doors . Gilford has been without a service station and a local store for the community since 2018, and our new EuroSpar supermarket provides everything the area needs under one roof.
“As well as providing great ranges of local fresh foods coupled with everyday essentials for local residents, we are delighted to partner with J Hutton & Son’s Butchers and to provide Delish food-to-go and Barista Bar coffee to go services.
“Additionally, fuel and electric vehicle charging facilities are available for our shoppers, with Gilford sitting between large towns and cities including Armagh, Banbridge and Portadown, providing high footfall in passing trade.”
This development is not only about providing essential services; it has also created job opportunities for 29 individuals, contributing to the local economy. The Henderson Group’s commitment to investing in Gilford is a promising sign of growth and revitalisation for the area.
With the new EuroSpar having opened its doors, Gilford residents can look forward to a modern shopping experience that brings convenience and quality right to their doorstep.
