From growing up in the charming rural setting of Derryhale, to later moving to the now bustling Craigavon area, some would say this is where Caroline’s journey truly began.
Caroline McCann, would be more familiar to many around Portadown formally as Speers. Caroline is the daughter of a business dynasty in the town center Gordon and Margaret Speers and grand-daughter of John and Maude Jeffers of Jeffers fame, which was located on West Street in Portadown for over 120 years.
Caroline’s educational path took her through Clounagh Junior High School, and later continued at Portadown College, where she further developed her skills and interests. Finally, she attended the Belfast Institute, where she earned an Advanced Diploma in Administrative Management.
Throughout her school years, Caroline had a particular fondness for Spanish, a subject that sparked her interest and curiosity. Beyond academics, she nurtured a dream of becoming a hairdresser, showcasing her creative flair and love for beauty.
In her mid-20s, Caroline made a pivotal decision to venture into the world of fitness. She initially delved into Exercise to Music, honing her skills and sharing her passion for movement by teaching Aerobics at the former Cascades Leisure Centre. However, it was a personal experience with back pain that steered her towards a new path.
Speaking to UrbanABC Caroline recalls; “Through having back pain myself I attended a Pilates class where my teacher Victoria Cunningham encouraged me to complete the teaching qualification”.
Caroline found not just relief but also inspiration and pursued a teaching qualification in Pilates, marking a significant shift in her fitness career.
Embracing this new focus, Caroline specialised in Pilates, dedicating herself to helping others improve their physical well-being. For the past 12 years, she has been a pillar in the community, teaching Pilates in various settings, including Brownlow Community Hub, Seagoe Parish Centre, and Millennium Court in Portadown.
“My career has evolved through various CPD undertaken and my own health issues to further undertake the needs and requirements of clients especially those who have pre-existing medical conditions, perimenopause/menopause clients and those with chronic pain conditions”.
Caroline’s journey from Aerobics to Pilates exemplifies her resilience, adaptability, and commitment to empowering others through fitness. Her impact resonates in the community, where her classes have become a cornerstone of health and wellness for many.
Being a small business owner isn’t always easy as Caroline recalls from the 2020 pandemic as Coronavirus reeked havoc both personally and professional. “COVID19 was a very challenging time as literally overnight I had to convert my living room into a studio at home and learn the digital world of Zoom.
“The classes were all at full capacity and kept myself and others active with their health both physically and mentally with what was a very challenging time.
“My classes are an extension of my family and I have gained a lot of emotional support from my clients during what has been a very challenging time with my husband’s chronic ill health and the subsequent issues this has caused for myself alongside other health complications.
“It is at times like this that the comradeship of clients is what can help get you through the most difficult times, for that I am so thankful to each and every client”.
Caroline believes that anyone with a passion for teaching Pilates should pursue their dreams. She emphasises the importance of collaboration over competition in the fitness industry. With the growing demand for skilled instructors, there is ample opportunity for those willing to share their knowledge and passion.
“As Joseph Pilates himself wisely stated, “Every moment of our life can be the beginning of great things.” Caroline exemplifies this philosophy, encouraging aspiring instructors to embrace their journey and contribute to the wellness of others.
Caroline is a vibrant individual who finds joy in the simple pleasures of life. One of her favorite activities is walking her dogs, Pixie and Sam. Their companionship brings her immense happiness “they are amazing company and always have a cuddle for me” says Caroline.
In addition to her love for her furry friends, Caroline has embraced the invigorating practice of cold water dipping, which she started three years ago. “I would encourage anyone who has thought about it to just give it a go. The happy endorphins are well worth the cold and the people you meet along the way is amazing for sure”.
Caroline is also a proud member of Fitzone – Menopause Support Group, where she has found the community to be an invaluable source of support and information, allowing her to connect with like-minded women who share similar experiences. Through her journey, Caroline inspires others to embrace life’s adventures and seek out supportive communities that foster growth and connection.
