We chat to Jon Poots, owner of Mulhollands on the Square in Dromore.
Tell us a bit about yourself and the business.
“I have been in hospitality for 30 years, working up from glass collecting to now owning 3 venues, Mulhollands on the Square Dromore, The Cardan Bar and Grill in Lisburn and The Four Trees in Moira.”
Mulhollands on the Square is the second venue we acquired back in 2019.”
“It was a family run business for over 50 years which we were privileged to be offered the opportunity to take on.”
“Having a strong family connection to the town of Dromore made the pull stronger still. Situated in the very heart of the square, we have a strong presence in the town.”
“The pub has evolved greatly since we took over, Covid forcing our hand to speed up our food plans in 2020. Having built this side up we embarked on a major refurbishment programme in autumn 2024 to provide a venue that embraced our growing food business, not just the drinks side of things. The venue now is very much a multi-faceted business offering food, drinks, coffees, a beer garden, live sports, function space and games area alongside our established Off Sales.”
How did the business start?
“Our element of the business started in March 2019, taking over from the Mulholland family. It was a traditional pub and Off Sales.”
“Our overall vision was to add food to the venue at some stage. As mentioned Covid forced our hand.”
Why is shopping local so important?
“Shopping local is essential! It supports business, which supports everything in a circular manner…made round to go round!”
“On top of that is the community spirit it generates and relationships it develops across the town.”
What do you love most about your town?
“Community spirit and general togetherness.”
