For over three decades, Lorna Butler has been an integral part of the Banbridge community, her life woven into the very fabric of the town. While many know her as a friendly face behind the town’s Crafty Wishes and a long-time resident, Lorna’s story is one of artistic passion, entrepreneurial spirit, and the unwavering pursuit of a creative dream.

From an early age, Lorna harboured a deep love for arts and crafts, a fascination that would eventually shape her life’s path. Though she initially trained as a hairdresser, a practical skill that provided a steady income, Lorna always felt a pull towards the creative industry.

Speaking to UrbanABC, Lorna recalls; “I knew in my heart that I wanted to work with my hands, to create something beautiful and unique.”

It was needlecrafts that truly captured her imagination, the intricate art of transforming simple threads into stunning works of art. As she raised her family – three daughters and a son – Lorna found solace and inspiration in the rhythmic motion of the needle and thread.

With her daughters now exploring the world and her son recently earning his master’s degree in archaeology, Lorna has fully embraced her entrepreneurial spirit, dedicating herself to growing her needlecraft business.

Of her career, Lorna says; “My career has been a journey of continuous evolution, shaped by both personal growth and external influences.

“One significant lesson I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability. The market is constantly changing, and it’s crucial to stay informed and be willing to adjust your strategies. The recent revival of crafts and hobbies, spurred by the Covid pandemic, has been a positive turning point for my business. It taught me the value of resilience and the importance of staying connected with my community.”

Lorna credits her success to the strong relationships she has cultivated with her customers over the years. “The pandemic and credit crunch could have easily ruined the retail trade,” she admits, “but luckily my customers have stayed loyal and supported me throughout the struggles.” This unwavering support has enabled her to adapt and innovate, ensuring her business remains a vital part of the Banbridge community.

“My husband Joe and my kids have always been a huge support to me”, they are always there to listen and sometimes give a new perspective”

Her advice to fellow entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Keep evolving and be ready to adapt your business if you need to. Always look ahead.” This philosophy has guided Lorna through challenging times, allowing her to not only survive but also thrive in a constantly changing market.

Beyond her business acumen, Lorna understands the importance of balance. She prioritises her personal wellbeing through a variety of passions. Her commitment to travel, walking, Pilates, and socialising offers a glimpse into a well-rounded life that fuels her creativity and enhances her entrepreneurial spirit.

Lorna’s love for travel takes her to new and exciting destinations, providing fresh perspectives and inspiration. Whether exploring bustling cities or tranquil landscapes, she finds that travel broadens her horizons and sparks new ideas. Walking and Pilates, on the other hand, keep her grounded and centered. These activities not only promote physical health but also offer a sense of mindfulness and relaxation, allowing her to approach her work with renewed energy and focus.

But perhaps most importantly, Lorna values the connections she makes through socialising. Whether it’s catching up with friends over coffee or attending community events, she understands the importance of building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging.

By nurturing her passions and prioritising her wellbeing, Lorna exemplifies the idea that a balanced life is essential for both personal fulfillment and professional success.
