A Co. Armagh dining experience has recently been nominated for the esteemed Countryside Alliance Awards, a testament to its longstanding legacy and community impact.

Sinton’s at the Bridge, nestled in the picturesque village of Scarva has a deep set history dating back to 1919 when James Sinton acquired the site, which was originally the family home. This strategic location beside the railway station was pivotal for the transport of horses throughout Ireland, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey.

James Sinton’s passion for horses laid the foundation for what would become a thriving hub for equestrian enthusiasts. His son, Willie John, continued this tradition, managing the yard until his death in 1989.

Decades later Sinton’s at the Bridge has become a beloved local gem since it unfurled its doors in October 2012. The journey to establishing this thriving eatery began five years earlier, marked by hard work and dedication that required both physical and mental resilience.

The vision for the restaurant was not just a fleeting idea; it was a dream that took shape through tireless effort and commitment. The founders poured their hearts into creating a space that would not only serve delicious meals but also foster a warm and inviting atmosphere for the community.

Since its inception, the rewards have been remarkable. The restaurant has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors, celebrated for its delightful menu and exceptional service. The combination of scenic surroundings and a welcoming ambiance has made it a perfect spot for gatherings, celebrations, or simply enjoying a meal with loved ones.

With a focus on quality ingredients and a passion for culinary excellence, the restaurant continues to thrive, drawing in guests who appreciate the hard work and dedication that went into its creation. The success story of this establishment is a testament to the power of perseverance and the joy of seeing a dream come to life in the heart of Scarva.

Julianne shared her passion for the business, stating, “It has always been a dream of mine to run my own restaurant. Both myself and my husband have worked in the hospitality sector for many years prior to opening Sinton’s at the Bridge.”

Her commitment to the area is evident as she explained, “I picked Scarva because it is a beautiful village and it is where my mother grew up so the family have a deep connection to the area, in fact our family still farms the land”. Graeme and Julianne Morton. Sinton's at the Bridge Scarva

The restaurant prides itself on delivering “friendly professional service with honest traditional food presented in a contemporary manner,” Julianne added, highlighting the ethos behind their culinary offerings.

The journey to opening the restaurant was not without its challenges; “It was a long time coming, with planning permission taking five years to come through but I would not change a thing,” she reflected.

Julianne also emphasised the importance of their dedicated team, saying, “The business would not be where it is today without our great team of staff, some of which have been there since day one.” This strong foundation has helped the restaurant flourish, making it a cherished spot for both locals and visitors alike.

With a focus on quality and community, this restaurant continues to thrive, embodying the spirit of Scarva and the dreams of its founders.

The nomination for the Countryside Alliance Awards not only acknowledges Sinton’s at the Bridge as a culinary delight but as a successful business but also celebrates its role in preserving the  heritage of the community.
