Victor Sloan is recognized as one of Ireland’s major visual artists, making significant contributions to the art world. Born in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Victor now resides in Portadown. His artistic journey began with formal education at Belfast and Leeds Colleges of Art, where his skills as a photographer developed earning him recognition for his unique style.

Victor’s work is characterised by his remarkable versatility and inventiveness, enabling him to create powerful images that resonate with audiences both locally and internationally. As an influential artist and educator, he has garnered an international reputation, showcasing his ability to blend traditional techniques with contemporary themes.

A new exhibition of Victor’s work titled  “Belonging,” which recently opened in Portadown is a triumph for arts venue Millennium Court and showcases the powerful work of the renowned Irish visual artist. This exhibition spans Victor’s seminal pieces from the 1980s and 1990s, highlighting his profound explorations of identity, culture, and conflict in Northern Ireland during a time of deep political upheaval.

The exhibition features selections from some of Sloan’s iconic series, including “The Walk,” “The Platform and the Field,” “The Birches,” “Craigavon,” “Drumming,” “Sham Fight,” “Explosion,” “Vietnamese Boat People,” and “Circus, Portadown.”

Each piece delves into the landscape, tensions, and everyday culture of that era, offering visitors a compelling insight into the complexities of life in Northern Ireland during a pivotal time in its history.

Speaking to UrbanABC, Geraldine Lawless, Manager of Millennium Court said; “We are thrilled to showcase this important work at Millennium Court, where art becomes a bridge to understanding our past and present.”

Visitors to the exhibition will not only experience the rich narrative woven through Sloan’s art but will also gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical context that shaped his work. “Victor Sloan: Belonging” is a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of art and societal issues, making it a significant addition to the cultural landscape of contemporary art in Ireland.

Geraldine continued; “Millennium Court is a vibrant hub for creativity and community engagement. We are dedicated to showcasing diverse artistic expressions that resonate with our local culture and history, providing a space where art can inspire and connect us all.” 

Through his art, Victor Sloan continues to inspire and educate, solidifying his place as a pivotal figure in the landscape of Irish visual arts. His dedication to the craft and commitment to exploring new ideas ensure that he remains a prominent voice in the artistic community.

In 2002, Victor Sloan was awarded an MBE, recognizing his significant contributions to the art community. His accolades include being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, an Academician of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts, and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. These honors reflect his influence and stature in the world of visual arts.

Victor’s works which have gained international acclaim with exhibitions held across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. His art is featured in numerous important private and public collections around the globe, underscoring his status as a leading figure in contemporary art. Through his diverse portfolio, Victor Sloan continues to inspire art lovers and collectors worldwide.

Speaking of the opening night Geraldine concluded; “We would like to thank the Lord Mayor Sarah Duffy for opening this event for us and the Deputy Lord Mayor Kyle Savage for their attendance at our two exhibition events.

“We would like to thank Eóin Tennyson MLA and Councillor Julie Flaherty and Kate Evans for their support at these opening events.
