Ireland’s esteemed community awards took place at the Hillgrove Hotel in Monaghan on Saturday, November 2, 2024, with Monaghan County Council proudly hosting the IPB Pride of Place Gala Awards Ceremony. Organised by the peacebuilding charity Co-operation Ireland and sponsored by IPB Insurance, these awards spotlight and honour outstanding community endeavours across the island.

This year marks the 22nd consecutive year of the IPB Pride of Place Awards, with nominations from all corners of Ireland, showcasing a diverse range of activities that reflect the vibrant social fabric of our communities.

The awards play a vital role in recognising and celebrating the hard work and dedication of individuals and groups who contribute to the betterment of their neighbourhoods. They serve as a platform to highlight the achievements of community members, fostering a sense of pride and encouraging further involvement.

Whether it’s honouring volunteers, local businesses, or community projects, these events help strengthen the bonds within the community and create an opportunity for community members to gather, share stories, and celebrate their collective accomplishments.

Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council community groups emerged as the runaway winners at this year’s awards, often referred to as the Community Oscars. With five entries submitted across different categories, the Borough triumphed with three wins:

– Community Wellbeing Initiative (City): Nit and Natters, Armagh City
– Inclusive Communities (City): Vibe, Armagh City
– Areas with a population of 2000-5000: Portadown Wellness Centre – joint runners-up

Armagh-based Nit & Natters has become a beacon of creativity and community spirit since its inception in October 2021. Founded by Armagh woman Lily McMullan, the group was born from a personal journey inspired by family illness during the lockdown. Seeking a therapeutic outlet, Lily began knitting headbands, which not only provided comfort to her but also sparked a desire to connect with others.

As word spread, more individuals joined Lily in her mission, transforming a solitary hobby into a vibrant community project. Nit & Natters now brings together people of all ages who share a passion for knitting and crafting. The group focuses on creating beautiful handmade items while fostering friendships and support among its members.

Through workshops and social gatherings, Nit & Natters has not only enriched the lives of its participants but has also contributed to local charities, showcasing the power of creativity in bringing people together.

Vibe, located in heart of Armagh City, officially opened its permanent base in 2015, but its roots trace back to 2006. It began as a young adults group, catering to those aged 16 to around 30, meeting every other Saturday. As the community grew, so did their vision.

In 2014, Vibe took a significant step by purchasing their current building located on Little Barrack Street in the city and starting renovations. After much anticipation, they joyfully launched Vibe on April 25, 2015.

Portadown Wellness Centre serves as an open door for men and women in the local community who may be struggling with mental ill health, addiction, physical illness, loneliness, or isolation. When individuals are ready, they are here to help them move forward positively.

The Centre have a dedicated team of qualified therapists providing professional therapeutic counseling on-site. Additionally, they offer a strong selection of inspirational and therapeutic activities, all facilitated by highly skilled, caring, and empathetic tutors.

By providing support and empowerment for those affected by various challenges, Portadown Wellness Centre continues to fill a vital role in improving people’s quality of life. Their vision is to ‘lift the cloud of mental illness’ and help individuals recover, regain their confidence, and become happier, more fulfilled individuals.

Posting on social media, Nit and Natters expressed their delight at the win saying, “We only went and won. What a fab group of ladies. Thank you to all involved. All the hard work to get us here paid off, and to come away as All-Ireland Pride of Place Winner in very strong groups from all over Ireland.”

Portadown Wellness Centre said, “We at Portadown Wellness Centre are beyond delighted to receive the runner-up award for our contributions to the community. More importantly, it was fantastic to catch up with other amazing community groups from around the country and of course from our own ABC Borough. We feel truly inspired”.

A huge congratulations to the winning groups and heartfelt appreciation to all the nominees!
