BSG, the contractor for NI Water, is moving ahead smoothly with installing a new large sewer by tunneling beneath Meadow Lane in Portadown as part of a £7.8m improvement scheme. They have now planned to proceed with the next stage of open-cut pipelaying operations
The upcoming phase of open-cut work on Portmore Street is set to kick off around mid to the end of next week, specifically on the 4th or 5th of September. During this period, Portmore Street will be closed to through traffic between Meadow Lane and Harford Street for approximately 5 weeks.
Access to Portmore Street will be redirected through Edward Street or Thomas Street to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. It’s important to note that parking restrictions will be in place around the work area on Portmore Street for safety purposes.
Additionally, a one-way closure will be enforced on Meadow Lane at its junction with Portmore Street to facilitate these works. This means that traffic from Thomas Street/Tavanagh Avenue and the Health Centre won’t have access along Meadow Lane past the Portmore junction. To guide traffic, signage will be prominently displayed, and notifications will be shared through local media channels.
On Friday the Meadow Lane East Car Park was reinstated and fully reopened. Some minor works will be required in the car park later in the year (around mid/late October) which are likely to only affect 2-3 spaces. The project team will be in touch with council in advance of that work.
Safety is a top priority, especially on construction sites with Ni Water kindly requesting the public’s cooperation in keeping unauthorised individuals, particularly children, away from the site and machinery. A spokesperson for NI water said,
“We would take this opportunity to highlight that construction sites are dangerous areas for unauthorised persons, especially children and we would appreciate your co-operation in ensuring that children do not play in or around the site or machinery. Working areas will have warning signs in place to protect the public from any hazards. The public are advised to stay out of these working areas for their own safety”.
Warning signs will be visible in the working areas to safeguard the public from any potential hazards. It’s crucial for everyone’s safety to avoid entering these working zones.
NI Water and BSG are committed to minimising disruptions and completing the work efficiently.
“We want to assure you that we will strive to keep disruption to a minimum and complete the work in the shortest possible timeframe”.
