Tell us a bit about yourself and the business.
“I’m Ryan Smith, the Store Manager at MAC Electrical Supplies, located in the Armagh Business Centre. I’m assisted by Chloe Nic-aoghan. We supply everything electricians need for their daily work, catering to both domestic and trade customers. Our stock includes distribution boards, MCBs and RCBOs, light switches, socket screws, all kinds of light bulbs, indoor and outdoor lights, smoke alarms, conduit and trunking for trade use, and every type of electrical cable, which we can cut to suit from as little as 1 metre.
“We identified a need for a local electrical supplier for businesses in Armagh city. The number of electrical contractors in the city has grown, and with the team’s knowledge, it was clear there was a real requirement for it.”
How did the business start?
“MAC Electrical Supplies is a family-run business, originally started by Maurice McBirney, who has now retired. His son, Philip McBirney, has since taken over.”
Why is shopping local so important?
“By choosing local businesses, you’re directly supporting the people who live and work in your area, which fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility.
“Local businesses often offer a more personalised and enjoyable shopping experience, with knowledgeable staff and unique products. Plus, you’re investing in the local economy, helping to keep Armagh thriving.”
What do you love most about your town?
“It’s the sense of community—whether it’s through local events, the small businesses where people know your name, or neighbours helping each other out.
“The local businesses give the town its character and charm, and you often get a more personal, thoughtful service too.”
