Tell us a bit about yourself and the business.
“My name is Julie Lynas, and I’m proud to be the owner and manager of His & Hers salon. The salon is based at Millennium Court, William Street in Portadown, where we offer a full range of hair services for both gents and ladies.
“We welcome gents to either walk in or book an appointment, making it really convenient for those who need a quick cut or shave. For ladies, we work by appointment only to ensure each client gets personalised attention and the best possible experience. We’re also lucky to have a very talented makeup artist on site who can help with special occasions, giving our clients a full beauty service all under one roof”.
How did the business start?
“The business has a rich history—John Johnston opened the barbers on Bridge Street 60 years ago, and it was actually the first unisex salon in Portadown, which was quite groundbreaking at the time.
“He ran the salon for 40 years before retiring, and that’s when I stepped in to take over. Since then, we’ve worked hard to keep the salon’s welcoming atmosphere alive while also updating our services to meet modern styles and trends. It’s been wonderful to continue a family tradition and serve the community for so many years”.
Why is shopping local so important?
“Shopping local is really about community for us. We want people to feel good and happy when they come through our doors, and supporting local businesses helps keep that sense of connection alive. In today’s world, where so much shopping is done online, it’s even more important to have places where people can meet face-to-face, chat, and build relationships.
“When people support local shops, it helps the whole town thrive—keeping jobs here and making sure Portadown stays vibrant and full of life”.
What do you love most about your town?
“One of my favourite things about Portadown is the River Bann and the beautiful walks along its banks. It’s such a peaceful place to unwind, and having those natural blue and green spaces right around the town centre is a real blessing.
“It makes it easy for people, especially those working in town, to get outside during lunch breaks and enjoy some fresh air and nature. These spaces really add to the quality of life here and make Portadown a lovely place to live and work”.
