While many would find themselves overwhelmed after the birth of a child, one remarkable Derrytrasna woman took a different path. Sinead McMahon, a self-described “workaholic,” transformed her maternity leave into a launching pad for her entrepreneurial dreams. In 2013, she conceived the idea for Danann Crafts, a place which celebrates local artistry and craftsmanship.

With the support of her husband, Sinead initially focused on creating a website. However, by the end of 2014, her vision had expanded to include a physical retail space.

Although Sinead admits it’s not a big space; it has a lot of nooks and crannies bursting with crafts made by local artists and crafters from the surrounding areas. Sinead emphasises the hidden talent in the community, encouraging locals to discover the artistry right on their doorstep.

Transitioning from a flexible business model to one with set hours posed its challenges, especially when Sinead learned she was pregnant just three months after opening the store. Speaking to UrbanABC Sinead reflects “I’ve always heard that it takes five years to make a mark in a town, and they were right.”

Despite a strong start, the journey became difficult as Sinead struggled to attract crafters and artists to her location. “We’re a bit off the main path; most artists are located near the coast or in Belfast but we still have an abundance of local artists in our own town who prefer to showcase their work where they know it will sell.”

Originally an online entity, Danann Crafts found a permanent home on Lurgan’s William Street, transforming an old dental surgery into a vibrant treasure trove of local artwork.

Now a mother of three Sinead admits it’s a juggling act. “It’s a busy life, running a small family business, processing online orders all while being a mummy.

“Regulars to the shop will know somedays they’ll come in and there could be one of the kids sitting up, but that’s the beauty of the shop – it all adds to the quirkiness”

Sinead invites everyone to join in the fun at Danann Crafts, especially during their popular Sip and Paint nights, where creativity flows as freely as the wine. “Who knew a glass of vino could turn your artistic ambitions into abstract genius?” she quips, embodying the spirit of community and creativity that defines Danann Crafts.
