In a world where most businesses focus on growth and profit, some choose to embrace a different approach—one centered on sustainability, community, and inclusivity. This philosophy lies at the heart of a unique venture based in Portadown, which believes in repairing what already exists, making the most of available resources, and taking pride in their achievements.

From an early age, Philip Nicholson developed a deep passion for music that would shape his life and career. Philip, who was educated at Laurelhill Community College in Lisburn, always had a fascination with the rhythms and beats that shape the world of sound. However, it was the art of DJing that really stole his heart.

Philip’s journey into the music industry began at the age of 15. Surrounded by the vibrant sounds of various genres, he found himself fascinated not just by the music itself, but also by the technical aspects of it all.

He immersed himself in learning about sound setups, hosting events, and absorbing knowledge from experienced professionals in the field. The do’s and don’ts of the industry became second nature to him as he navigated through his early experiences.

Set-backs

In 2018, Philip faced a life-altering challenge when he suffered a back injury. This incident completely changed everything for him. The impact was not just physical; it also took a toll on his mental health. Philip speaks openly about his struggles with depression and anxiety, which made it difficult for him to navigate his changing world.

Speaking to UrbanABC, Philip says, “The back injury completely changed everything for me. This effect was not only physical but mental as well; depression, anxiety, and everything else that comes with it set in, which in turn stopped me from getting out and about the same way I would have.”

The situation worsened with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Philip had put in a tremendous amount of time and effort working behind the scenes to advance his career. But just like that, everything was taken away overnight.

“Suddenly everything changed and all of a sudden everything was gone. Unfortunately it was like that for a lot of people and businesses, but the hospitality industry was hit so hard”.

For Philip, every day is a learning opportunity. He believes in the importance of continuous growth and is always eager to absorb new information. This dedication to music has allowed him to stay relevant in an ever-evolving industry. With a solid foundation built on passion and curiosity, Philip is well on his way to making a significant mark in the world of DJing and music.

A station is born

Phil recounted, “It was my birthday in August, and my mum gave me a bit of money, as mums do. I don’t know why, but the first thought that sprang to mind was a a radio station.

“I said to James and in all really went very quickly from there”.

With Phil’s rich background as a DJ and entertainer, along with James’s involvement in the local music scene—writing, recording, and mastering tracks—they recognized they had the ideal foundation to make a meaningful impact.

Thus, Pulse Online Radio Station was born. The station operates from one of Portadown’s hidden gems, a grain mill located in the old back alley thoroughfares just off the town’s Church Street. Everyone is invited to join in the shows and activities, creating a welcoming atmosphere that promotes a sense of belonging and community involvement.

Pulse Radio is making waves in the realm of mental health advocacy by offering a unique platform that encourages individuals to “give it a go” at presenting. This initiative not only empowers participants but also plays a significant role in combating mental health issues within the community.

“The studio is made up of re-purposed materials. It’s reflection of our philosophy. Everything is something that others might see as discarded or useless. Each piece has its own story and character, and together they create an environment that we hope sparks a sense of belonging.

“It’s not a large commercial radio station – it’s a community” says Phil.

Philosophy

At its core, Pulse Radio understands the therapeutic power of expression. By giving people the chance to take the microphone and share their stories, experiences, and creativity, the station creates an environment that encourages open connection and communication. This opportunity can be transformative for many, helping to break down barriers and lessen the feelings of isolation that often come with mental health struggles.

“I know what isolation looks like, I’ve been there. I believe it’s important to create spaces where individuals can feel safe to express their feelings.

“By talking about our struggles and sharing experiences, we not only lighten our own burdens but also help others feel less alone”.

This approach not only promotes inclusivity but also creates a vibrant environment where diverse voices can be heard and appreciated. By valuing what they have and maximising its potential, this venture showcases the strength of community-driven initiatives. It highlights the significance of creating environments where everyone feels appreciated and empowered to make a contribution.

Ever the optimist, Phil says, “For anyone looking to break into the industry, take your time, take advice on board, and don’t be afraid to take a little criticism as well.

“This is a great industry, but it is also not an easy one. Surround yourself with good, positive people.”

Football used to be The Sound Maestro’s main passion. It offered him not just physical activity but also a crucial way to relieve stress and connect with friends. However, after suffering a back injury, Phil had to shift his focus and rethink his athletic pursuits.

After my back injury, I needed something that allowed me to stay active and engaged without the physical strain of football. "I started participating in a few local competitions whenever I could. It’s not just about the competition; it’s about the thrill of the game and the connections I’ve made with fellow players. "Every match is a chance to not only challenge myself but also to enjoy the camaraderie that comes with it. Darts has really helped me find my footing again and brought a new sense of joy into my life."
