Dara Vallely, the visionary behind the renowned Armagh Rhymers, has been a trailblazer in bringing educational theatre to schools for over five decades. As the creative director of the Armagh Rhymers, Dara’s passion for art, music, and drama shines through in every performance.
Dara’s deep-rooted connection to his hometown of Armagh serves as a wellspring of inspiration for his work. Influenced by the rich history and mythology of the region, including the ancient site of Emain Macha (Navan Fort) and the epic ‘Tain’ tales, Dara’s artistry reflects a profound appreciation for Celtic heritage and storytelling traditions.
Reflecting on his formative years, Dara candidly shares insights into his early interests and influences. Despite not resonating strongly with traditional academics, Dara found solace and purpose in his dedication to cross country running, honing his skills and determination on the track. During this period, he admits to a lack of clearly defined ambitions, a sentiment many can relate to as they navigate the uncertainties of youth.
Speaking to UrbanABC, Dara said, “I wasn’t that fond of School and spent a lot of time working on my cross country running. I really can’t identify any major ambitions from this period but music was my big passion”.
However, amidst the academic landscape, Dara’s true passions began to blossom. Music emerged as a profound love, a source of inspiration that resonated deeply within him. Rooted in his upbringing, Dara credits his parents for instilling in him not only a love for music but also a burgeoning interest in the world of art. These foundational influences would later shape his artistic journey, laying the groundwork for the creative pursuits that would define his path forward.
Having attended Armagh Christian Brothers School, Dara recalls educator Larry Ryan who would become this inspiration with regard to drama and blended with a family background steeped in artistic talent, Dara would draw further inspiration from his father’s painting skills and his mother’s musical talents. Together with his brother Brian, a respected painter in his own right, Dara shares a passion for music, art, and heritage, channeling these passions into the captivating performances of the Armagh Rhymers.
Ironically, given his own admission of a lack of draw to traditional education, Dara went on to become a Teacher himself. Dara’s commitment to enriching young minds through the power of theatre is evident in the group’s extensive repertoire of plays for both adults and children. From captivating folk plays like “The Enormous Turnip” to the enchanting “The Giant’s Garden,” the Armagh Rhymers have left a lasting impact on audiences across Ireland and beyond.
Collaborating closely with schools and cultural organisations, Dara seamlessly integrates his artistry with the performances of the Armagh Rhymers, a group renowned for their engaging theatrical productions. Over the past two decades, Dara and the Armagh Rhymers have left an indelible mark on countless children worldwide, sparking curiosity and creativity through their art and performances.
Dara’s artistic talents extend beyond the stage, as he is also a well-known painter whose works have graced galleries in Ireland and the USA. Inspired by his parents’ love for music and art, Dara’s creative spirit knows no bounds, whether he’s playing the concertina, flute, whistle, or piano, or immersing himself in the vibrant world of painting.
Despite any challenges or detractors along the way, Dara’s unwavering dedication to his craft and the community shines through. His ability to seamlessly blend his hobbies with his professional endeavours, from daily music sessions to painting and tending to his garden, is a testament to his holistic approach to life and art.
Parting ways with remarkable individuals Dara has had the privilege to collaborate with throughout his career has been a poignant and heartfelt experience. Saying farewell to colleagues who have been more than just coworkers but friends and mentors has left an indelible mark on his professional journey.
Recalling the sadness around such farewells Dara said, “Saying a last goodbye to the great people I have worked with over the years. And of course family members”
Not one to take criticism as a personal attack but more as constructive feedback, it’s clear Dara’s five decades focused on self belief and motivation have equipped him with the life skills which have carried him through an amazing career. “The Armagh Rhymers have been on the go for 50 years now. I never take any heed of negative comments”.
Dara artistic expression serves as a bridge between past wisdom and contemporary insights, offering a unique perspective on the interplay between the spiritual and the material. His ability to infuse his paintings with the intangible essence of music and spirituality showcases a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all aspects of human experience. In a world where the unseen often shapes our reality, Dara’s artistry stands as a testament to the enduring power of creativity in illuminating the mysteries of existence.
