This year, The Gateway Theatre Group celebrates its 41st year of bringing pantomime to Portadown. As an amateur dramatics group, the Gateway Theatre prides itself on delivering performances that rival those in Belfast, showcasing their passion and dedication to the art form.
Last year, The Gateway Theatre marked their Ruby anniversary with the enchanting production of Cinderella, and this January, they are excited to present “Robinson Crusoe,” written by John Morley.
Adding to the excitement, they are also celebrating Eddie Drury, their beloved resident Dame, who is reaching an incredible 25 years in this role. His talent and charisma truly make him the star of the show.
Rehearsals for this year’s show kicked off in September, with the talented cast and dedicated team volunteering their time to bring the annual pantomime to Portadown.
This thrilling, adventure-filled pantomime follows Robinson Crusoe on his journey to Tobago, where he aims to find the hidden treasure marked on the map given to him by Old Jim.
However, Blackpatch the Pirate sneaks aboard and later recruits Jack Boot and his gang of ruthless pirates to try to steal the treasure.
Crusoe faces unexpected challenges from Demon Oylslick, who threatens to pollute the High Seas, but Fairy Detergenta steps in to thwart this danger.
After an incredible shipwreck, Crusoe meets Man Friday and a group of hungry cannibals led by Queen Wotta Woppa on the island.
Speaking to UrbanABC, Producer Hannah Duncan said, “We believe this is a fantastic opportunity for our community, with participants ranging from ages 12 and up.
“The commitment is significant, as we have been working diligently since September, with rehearsals and technical preparations occurring twice a week for the cast and once a week for the chorus”.
The performances of Robinson Crusoe will take place at Portadown Town Hall, running for ten shows ion January 2025.
