Hailing from the charming and historic town of Dromore, Carolyn McDonald has a deep-rooted connection to her community and a strong educational foundation from Dromore High School. Her academic interests in English language and Home Economics, with a special affinity for Needlework, reflect her diverse talents and creative spirit nurtured during her early years in School.
Stepping into one of Dromore’s most iconic buildings, it was clear from the off, that this was a story like no other. What was once Dromore’s main arrival point dating back to when it was the town’s train station between 1863 and 1956, Carolyn met me in the former ticket office where you could just imagine it having been a hive of activity with passengers. “Welcome to The Old Station Nursery”, the oversized 19th century style doors and original sliding office hatch had my hooked – I couldn’t wait to hear Carolyn’s story.
From a tender age, Carolyn’s aspirations gravitated towards the noble profession of nursing, a calling that has been a guiding light in her life’s journey. Her early passion for helping others and making a positive impact on people’s lives has fuelled her ambition to pursue a career dedicated to healthcare and compassion. Carolyn’s unwavering determination and compassionate nature are the cornerstones of her pursuit to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a Nurse, embodying the values of empathy and service that define her character.
As time went on her love for nursing children ignited a new spark within her, leading her to pursue a career in a primary school setting, where she could continue to nurture young minds and hearts.
Recalling the early days Carolyn says; “I began my career as a nurse but due to being a mum of two girls, shift work was difficult so I then worked as a classroom assistant. I had loved nursing children which inspired me to seek a career in a primary school”.
With an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision for creating a business that resonated with her values, Carolyn found inspiration while working in the school environment. Motivated by her desire to blend education and childcare, she made the bold decision to establish a day care nursery and so began the formation of The Old Station Nursery in Dromore. This endeavour allowed Carolyn to combine her expertise in educating children with her innate gift for providing care and support, embodying her commitment to fostering a nurturing and enriching environment for young learners.
“I had always thought I would like my own business so while working in the school I decided to open a day care nursery, combining educating and caring for children”
“Academically I went on to achieve my nursing qualification, childcare qualification and a qualification in Nursery management. When opening the nursery, I had three employees and to date now have 30.
Within 9 months of opening the demand was so great that I expanded and doubled the size of the nursery. After 5 years we were excepted onto the Pre-school government funded program and have been providing pre-school education ever since as well as providing all day care for working parents”.
Taking on one of Dromore’s most nostalgic buildings in no mean feat. The magnificent red brick structure is lovely cared for whilst diligently converted for a modern day business. Carolyn took time to show me around the former station and little touches such as the “Station Master” sign on the office door just help keep the history alive. The ornate features such as sliding sash windows and decorative architraves make you feel part of something special.
Regaling me with one of the most amazing stories, Carolyn recalled how around 12 years ago just as she was preparing for home, a knock coming to the door. Two gentlemen stood in the enormous doorway in what can only be described as a Lassie moment.
“The younger of the two gents asked if I would mind if they had a quick look around the outside. I was very curious about this. He explained that the older gentleman was his father, the man must have been in his 80’s. As it turned out the man was born upstairs in what would have been the Station Masters living quarters. He had since moved to Dublin and was back to visit Dromore and wanted to see his old homeplace.
“For me as a custodian of the building, I was delighted to show them both around, I can only image what it meant to the man and his son to see the place.
“Dromore is a fabulous town and it’s the connections both old and new that keep this town thriving. Those who have moved away come back to visit and new people have moved in who are embracing the historical charm of the town. The main street and indeed the side streets have an abundance of quaint shops that you just don’t find anywhere else”.
Amidst the whirlwind of responsibilities and successes, the most profound lesson Carolyn embraced is the importance of staying grounded. This guiding principle has anchored her through the highs and lows, reminding her to remain humble, connected to her purpose, and focused on the core values that drive her in her journey of nurturing young minds and shaping the future generation.
“I have learnt the importance of supporting and listening to my team. I have also learnt how important it is to work with our parents to give the children the best care and learning possible. The most operant thing I have learnt is to stay grounded”
Facing adversity head-on, Carolyn has navigated through profound challenges with resilience and determination. The journey through a brain tumour diagnosis and subsequent surgery was undoubtedly a difficult time, forcing her into submission both personally and professionally.
Speaking about the challenges she has faced, the Dromore businesswoman said, “In 2012 when I was diagnosed with a brain tumour and had surgery resulting in me being away from the business for 2 years. When I told my staff about my diagnosis they all reassured me that they would keep the business going until my return. My managers, two daughters, one of which was working in the nursery and my husband kept the business going at the same high standard throughout this very difficult time”.
The unforeseen challenges posed by the Covid lockdown, threatening the closure of the nursery, presented yet another formidable obstacle. Despite the uncertainties and fears that loomed, Caroyln’s resilience and perseverance shone through, preserving the legacy of two decades of hard work.
Celebrating a poignant moment in early August, as a longstanding staff member retired, marked a beautiful milestone in the narrative of The Old Station Nursery. The dedication and loyalty, spanning the journey from the early days to this significant juncture, reflected the deep bonds and lasting impact created within the nurturing community.
In the competitive landscape of entrepreneurship, embarking on a journey in a chosen field demands a strategic approach and determination. Reflecting on the invaluable advice shared, the essence of “you have to walk before you run” resonates with Carolyn.
“It may take a long time, with many hours of dedication and hard work, before you earn any money but be patient and eventually you will get a wage.
“My two daughters Hollie and Claire have no followed in my footsteps and are both Managers in the Nursery. It’s great to be able to say we are a family business and I get to work alongside my daughters every day. I couldn’t and wouldn’t want to do it without them”.
Embracing the joys of Motherhood and Grand Motherhood, family holds a special place in Carolyn’s heart as a mother of two and Nanny to four amazing boys (soon to be five grandchildren).
Beyond her roles in the family, her passion for cooking and reading illuminate her vibrant personality. The culinary arts and literary worlds offer Carolyn avenues for creativity and exploration, adding depth and richness to her daily experiences. Additionally, her commitment to Pilates and Yoga reflects a dedication to holistic well-being, nurturing both body and mind through mindful movement and relaxation.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, these moments spent with family, culinary creations, captivating books, and rejuvenating yoga sessions serve as pillars of balance and fulfillment, enriching Carolyn’s journey with joy, nourishment, and tranquility.
