With Christmas shopping now in full swing, shoppers are faced with a myriad of choices about where to spend their hard-earned money.
With major sales events like Black Friday, which runs on Friday, 29th November dominating the retail landscape, one Chamber of Commerce is urging residents to support the small businesses that form the backbone of our communities.
Portadown Chamber of Commerce is encouraging shoppers to “think High Street first” when making decisions about where to purchase.
Speaking to UrbanABC, President of Portadown Chamber of Commerce, William Hutchinson, said, “Black Friday has become synonymous with massive discounts and big-box retailers, drawing consumers into a frenzy of shopping. However, while these sales can be enticing, they often come at the cost of local businesses that struggle to compete with the deep pockets of national chains.
“We are asking people to consider the benefits of supporting local shops. Small businesses provide personalised service, unique products, and contribute to the local economy, creating jobs and fostering community spirit.”
In contrast to Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, which this year runs on Saturday 7th December, was created to encourage consumers to shop small and support local businesses. This initiative highlights the importance of local shops and encourages shoppers to think town centre first. By participating in Small Business Saturday, you not only find unique gifts but also support the entrepreneurs who invest in their communities.
“At Portadown Chamber of Commerce, we are dedicated to the philosophy of thinking high street first, recognising the vital role that local businesses play in our community. Supporting these businesses not only strengthens our economy but also fosters a sense of belonging and pride among residents.
“Portadown is a town on the mend, showcasing resilience and growth as we welcome a number of new businesses to our town recently, with several commercial premises now leased out and new businesses imminent,” said William.
As you plan your Christmas shopping, consider making a list of local businesses you would like to support.
