Matthew Alexander Quail, the esteemed founder of Quails in 1898, established a legacy that has endured through generations. Initially situated on Rathfriland Street in Banbridge, the Quail family business thrived under his stewardship, with his wife Dorothea (Dora) playing a crucial role in its operation. In 1900, the business relocated to its current location at 15 Newry Street, where the family resided on the premises’ first floor. The transition marked the beginning of a new chapter for Quails.

Joe Quail (Senior), born in 1906, exemplified dedication from a young age, leaving formal education early to assist his father in the business. The family later moved to Tullyear in 1923, a move that solidified their roots in the community. This location remains the cherished Quail family home to this day. Following Matthew Quail’s retirement in 1970, his son James assumed leadership, ushering in the third generation of Quail family management. James’s passion for farming seamlessly integrated the farm’s produce with the shop, notably renowned for its high-quality Limousin meat.

The year 1998 marked a significant milestone for Quails as they celebrated a century of trade, only to face adversity when a bomb devastated their premises. Undeterred, the Quail family embarked on a remarkable journey of resilience and innovation, culminating in the unveiling of a modernized building in May 2000. This new establishment now encompasses a butchery, deli, and cafe, symbolizing Quails’ unwavering commitment to quality and service.

Joe (Senior)’s early experiences in the business, from procuring calves in Belfast to observing skilled butchers in action, laid the foundation for his eventual leadership. Following Matthew Quail’s passing in 1930, Joe (Senior) assumed the mantle at a young age, steering the business successfully for nearly four decades, a testament to his dedication and acumen.
